迄今为止，大多数关于古代经济的学术观点被部分错误地归因于对二分法框架（例如，原始主义/现代，嵌入式/自由）的依赖，该框架在过去的和更现代的经济体系之间做出了错误的定性区分。这次讨论挑战了此类框架中使用的指标，因此挑战了与古代国家相关的现有经济实践模型中普遍存在的反市场推定。着重强调了西班牙裔前中美洲经济体的转变看法，部分是为了说明过去的理论框架如何帮助从考古和文本研究中得出的市场证据不断增加。建议对古铜时代的希腊古代经济进行类似的重新构想，包括可能对市场交易发挥更大的作用，并减少对交易和生产各个方面的直接皇室控制。
